Waste and Litter Volunteer

The Waste and Litter Volunteer Collaborate with existing programs to collect even more plastics and organic waste, reduce waste burning in town and stop waste, especially plastics, from entering the environment. Help Hutan Subur reduce its rubbish production.

Highlights:

  • Stay in the forest among the unique and diverse flora and fauna of the Sumatran rainforest.
  • Collaborate with existing programs to reduce waste and litter around the village of Bukit Lawang.
  • Develop and implement projects and programs to reduce waste and litter in the area around our project site, including reducing and collecting waste that makes its way into the forest and rivers around our project sites.
  • Enjoy the support of local staff to assist in developing, implementing, and promoting our projects.

Overview:

The Hutan Subur project site is in the border zone of the Gunung Leusur National Park, with the tourist village of Bukit Lawang being the closest to our site. This area is well known for its forests, rivers, mountains, flora, and fauna, with much of Sumatra’s tourism focused on this area. Like much of Indonesia, this area’s waste and litter management is fraught with issues leading to an unacceptable amount of litter and waste entering the natural environment.

Due to the importance of the natural environment in this area, some non-government organisations have stepped in to provide a trash bank where people can take their waste and a community garden where organic waste is processed into compost and given back to the community.

We aim to collaborate with these existing programs to collect even more plastics and organic waste, reduce waste burning in town and stop waste, especially plastics, from entering the environment.
